London – Scotland’s chief medical officer had resigned after breaking lockdown restrictions.

Dr Catherine Calderwood quit her post on Sunday 5 April after having been found to have visited twice her second home about one hour drive away and flouted social distancing rules.

The police had given her a warning for breaking her own government’s rule and she had since apologised for her actions.

Initially, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that she should stay in her job despite the mistake but Calderwood decided to leave her office saying that her actions and the publicity surrounding them “risked distracting from the pandemic response”.

The story broke when the Scottish Sun newspaper released photographs of Dr. Calderwood and her family visiting their second home in Fife on Saturday 4 April.
