Pinoy NHS Frontliners offer free medical Covid-19 advice to community in UK

By Gene Alcantara, UK

LONDON - A Filipino couple who works as NHS frontliners in South East England has offered to provide free online advice to fellow Filipinos in the United Kingdom on how to deal with Covid-19.

“I would like to offer help to all Filipino for free if they need advice over the phone. Ang new job ko po kasi involves seeing patients, assessing them, treating them, discharging or refer ko po, if needed,” Chie Romero who works as an on-call Senior Urgent Care Practitioner told Pinoy Portal Europe.

Romero also said she will entertain calls from kababayans who may be “worried about COVID-19 or yung may COVID-19 or possible na may COVID-19” or even those who feel unwell and need advice.

Asked why they want to do this, Chie Romero said, “Sana sa kaunting kakayahan ko, makatulong po ako sa ating mga kababayan. Grabe lungkot ko pag may nalalagas sa hanay namin, lalo Pinoy.”

Her husband William Romero who is an emergency nurse practitioner in Accident and Emergency is joining his wife’s crusade to provide medical advice to fellow Filipinos.

“I am willing to help din po. Wala naman magmamalasakit sa ating kapwa kung hindi tayo-tayo lang po.,” he said.

Chie says there are several potential categories of advice that she may give to those who would want help in assessing their conditions.

“Pag category 1 po tatawag ako ng ambulance. Category 2, advice and we need to call them everyday for follow up, mag self isolate lang po sila. Category 3 discharge po. Malalaman namin kung need tumawag ng ambulance by talking to them. Sana everyday matawagan ko sila to check and follow up kung may sakit sila kasi ganoon po ginagawa namin sa work,” Chie related.

Asked if they are not worried they might get inundated with calls, Chie said that, “Kaya naman po siguro. Bigay ko kay Will ang ibang calls. Emergency Nurse Practitioner naman sya ganoon din po work nya sa amin pero based sya sa A&E and marami sa kanyang pasyente trauma po.”

She also said that if that happens, “Maghahanap pa po kami ng pwede tumulong. May doctor po dito na kumpare naming Registrar. Pag marami na ang calls try ko din kung pwede sya para marami kaming pwede tumulong. I’m sure he won’t mind po.”

The couple’s catchment area for those who need medical advice on Covid-19 is in Medway in Kent, but they are willing to receive telephone calls or messages and give advice in any part of the UK to any Filipinos.

Both Chie and Will Romero hail from Virac, Catanduanes and have lived in Maidstone, Kent now for many years. They are established in the UK and live there with their daughter and son. Their eldest daughter and her husband now live away from home.

The Filipino community is one of the ethnic communities hardest hit by Covid-19. As of today, about 35 Filipinos have succumbed to the disease including at least 15 Filipinos who worked in the NHS. UK is ranked the 4th country in Europe after Italy, Spain and France with the most number of cases and 3rd in the number of deaths. There have been 133,078 confirmed cases of Covid-19 reported in the country with 18,738 deaths.
