Irish health minister cites pivotal role of Filipinos in healthcare at PH Independence event in Dublin

Dublin, Ireland - At the 127th Philippine Independence Day celebrations on June 14, Irish health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill expressed profound gratitude and admiration for the Filipino community, emphasizing their vital contributions to Irish society.


“I want to say to you on behalf of the Irish government and on behalf of the Irish people, how delighted we are about the growing community in Ireland, how proud we are having you as colleagues, friends, and citizens — every part of our community is enriched because of our friendship together,” Minister McNeill said, her voice resonating with warmth and sincerity.


“I speak to you with gratitude and humility on behalf of the Irish people to thank you for what you do for all our shared community in healthcare in Ireland,” she said, acknowledging the pivotal role Filipinos have played in strengthening the nation’s health services.


Throughout her speech, the Minister emphasized the mutual respect and admiration that characterize the Irish-Filipino relationship.

 “I have simply enormous respect for the contribution, professionalism, and expertise that you bring to work every day. I thank you for the kindness that you show to every person you meet, for the expertise that you give to us, and for allowing us to learn from you. I speak with constant hope that you’ll be treated with the best of respect and the best of goodwill at all times,” she conveyed, inspiring pride and unity among the Filipino community present in the event.


Highlighting the significant presence of Filipinos in the Irish healthcare workforce, Minister MacNeill reported that there are over 7,000 nurses and midwives from the Philippines registered in 2024, and that is the third-highest nationality in the registrar, including Irish people.


“We are so happy that it is so, ” MacNeill further added.


 The substantial number of Filipino health professionals in Ireland bringing in expertise and dedication to Irish healthcare industry have become integral to Ireland’s healthcare infrastructure.


Reacting to MacNeill´s praise of  Filipino health professionals, Denzil Ory Tabuan, a registered general nurse based in Dublin who was present in the celebration, said she is touched by the minister´s words.


“It reminds us why we do what we do- to make a difference in patients’ lives. Hearing such gratitude from someone like her gives us renewed strength and pride in our work. It’s a beautiful reminder that compassion knows no borders, and that our efforts are deeply appreciated, ” Tabuan told Pinoy Portal Europe.


The Independence day celebration in Dublin was organized by the Irish-Ilocano Association and featured  vibrant displays of Filipino culture and community spirit such as in the  solemn and proud ceremony of flags, symbolizing the unity and pride of the Filipino community in Ireland.

The Philippine flag was presented by Elza dela Cruz, President of the Ilocano-Irish Association, alongside Donald Hermosisima, President of the Kildare Filipino Community. The Irish flag was carried in by Lucy Anderson, Vice President of the Irish-Ilocano Association, accompanied by Knights of Rizal Commander Joseph Reid and Guardians Brotherhood Ireland President Jong-jong Torres.

The KKK (Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan) flag was presented by Sheila Riolo of the Waterford Filipino Community. Adding a personal and meaningful touch, the flag-making ceremony was presented by Lumad Nga Bisaya Vice President Salud Paderangga, BIBAK group treasurer Nieves Pilacan, Helping Hands Organization member Mariane Frances Jagoba, and Mathew Lifeline Agency Managing Director Alma Carpizo Bulatao Imus- symbolizing Filipino craftsmanship, resilience, and national pride.

Following the flag presentations, the program introduced community leaders and representatives from various Filipino organizations and Irish localities. These included Irene Ayen Jagoba of Helping Hands Organization, County Clare’s John Caryl Baguio, Dennis Patalinghug of Kaliwat Iliganon, ProperHealth Care Plus Managing Consultant Arlite Patalinghug, Cristina Ardenaso of Waterford Filipino Community, Waterford and community choreographer Geri Reorizo.

Also present in the event were Lumad Nga Bisaya Member Reynalyn Bryan, County Westmeath’s Eva Alojasin, Guardians Brotherhood Ireland Founder Rizaldy Amit, Galway-based Staff Nurse Angelica Carig, Chanelle Pharma Galway’s Eduardo Carig, Galway’s Berna Salmo Centino, and Nightingale Placement Agency Managing Director Daisy Mauhay.


The event was hosted by Bherdelle Saturinas-Conol and Vicente Lamamigo, who fostered a warm, festive atmosphere throughout the program. The ceremony then proceeded with the singing of the Philippine National Anthem, a traditional Doxology, and a heartfelt welcome address from Elza dela Cruz, setting the tone of unity and gratitude.

Cultural performances, including traditional Filipino dances and original Pinoy music, showcased the rich heritage of the community. The event was further honoured by the attendance of dignitaries such as Philippine Embassy Consul General Eric Aquino, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown Fine Gail County Councilor Lorraine Hall, and Kaliwat Iliganon Association Fine Gael member Patrick Balazo.

Additional guests also included immigration and dispute resolution barrister Nonito Barbero III and Cultural Affairs Officer Maricel Vallesfin, emphasizing the Filipino community’s diverse engagement in Irish society.


The celebration in Dublin not only commemorated Philippine independence but also reaffirmed the strong bonds of friendship, respect, and collaboration between Ireland and the Philippines.


As the Filipino community continues to thrive and make significant contributions to Irish society, the solidarity and gratitude from leaders like Minister MacNeill underscore the enduring bonds that tie Philippine and Irish relations.
